The International Wine Challenge is a wine and sake competition that is said to be "the most influential in the world."
The trophy is awarded to sake selected as being of particularly high quality from among the gold medal winning sakes, and was announced at 5:00 pm Japan time on June 6th. The sakes that have won the trophy will be nominated as candidates for the "Champion Sake", of which only one will be selected from each category. The Champion Sake will be announced at the IWC Awards Dinner to be held in London on Tuesday, July 9th.
This category trophy is awarded to the top sake out of 454 brands entered in the Junmai Daiginjo category, and is an honor only given to the 10 brands that placed first in each of the 10 categories out of a total of 1,504 sakes entered in all categories (25 brands including the place name trophies).
*The "(Prefecture) Trophy and (Place Trophy)" are awarded to runner-up brands from different production areas that received high praise but fell just short of the "Trophy" brand.
The sake is made from Yamagata Prefecture's "Yuki Megami" rice, which is ideal for brewing Daiginjo sake, and polished to 18%. The mash is then hung in a sake bag and only the drops that drip due to gravity are collected. Please enjoy the transparency of melted snow, the delicate flavor, and the silky texture.
